Behind the Scenes

Berlin ER, a German medical drama, is co-created by former emergency room physician turned screenwriter Samuel Jefferson and Viktor Jakovleski.

Produced by Violet Pictures and Real Film Berlin for ZDFneo and Apple TV+, the series is executive produced by Violet Pictures’ Alexis von Wittgenstein and Real Film Berlin’s Emmy-nominated Henning Kamm. It is directed by Alex Schaad and Fabian Möhrke, with international rights handled by Beta Film.

Often compared to ER, Berlin ER draws from Jefferson’s own experiences as an A&E doctor in the UK. He shared, “Because of the trauma of the job, I used to think, I never want to write a medical show. But that was the thing I had to write, I had all these stories.” (via whattowatch)

He adds that while some medical dramas portray doctors as superheroes, he aimed to reflect a grittier, more human reality: “It’s less glamorous and shiny and about human beings struggling with themselves. But even though it’s a gritty, tough drama, it still has love in it, a human element, and humour.”

Jefferson also found striking similarities between the experiences of doctors in the UK and Germany, noting, “Of course, some of the complexity behind how the system works is different, but the actual day-to-day pain of being a doctor and what you have to go through is very similar. So, all the human stories were very transferable.”
