EastEnders is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a documentary called EastEnders: 40 Years on The Square. Presented by Ross Kemp, this documentary will take the viewers of one of Britain’s most iconic shows on a nostalgic journey across time.
Ross will sit down with iconic guests who will share their memories of portraying some of the most loved characters of the nation as well as how their specific storylines impacted the culture at that time. EastEnders has been more than just a soap opera, it has also tackled multiple social issues, which will be discussed in this special.

EastEnders: 40 Years On The Square will air on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, at 8 pm, on BBC One. It will be available to stream on BBCiPlayer.
Presented by Ross Kemp (who is known to viewers as Grant Mitchell), EastEnders: 40 Years on The Square, will revisit some of the most ground-breaking storylines of the show. This will include Kat’s domestic violence, the first kiss between two gay men on British TV, Mark Fowler and Zack’s HIV diagnoses, and many more.
From 1985 till today, the show has kept viewers hooked with unmatched storylines and moments. Some of these storylines were never before done on British telly when they aired. The special will also feature interviews with actors like Adam Woodyatt, Letitia Dean, and more, who were a part of these memorable storylines.
Anita Dobson and Pam St Clement will also feature and will take viewers on a trip down memory lane. The documentary will also bring to light exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and offer a more intimate look at how the show became such a national and cultural institution.
Ross Kemp said in an interview with BBC, “It was a privilege to be asked to present this documentary, celebrating 40 years of EastEnders. During the making of it I was constantly reminded of the impact EastEnders has, not only on the cast and everyone that works on the show, but also on the audience, as well as the effect it has had culturally in the United Kingdom.”

To mark 40 years since EastEnders first began airing on BBC One, a whole week of episodes will take place over a single day. On Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, live studio viewers will be able to choose Denise’s potential suitor- either Jack or Ravi. Also, during this anniversary week, Cindy’s Christmas Day attacker will be revealed.
The EastEnders: 40 Years on The Square documentary has been directed by James Giles. It is produced by Gemma Moulton with Joe Ingham and Tom Keeling executive producing it. Scott Holland-Jones is the production manager with Damian Leask as the Editor. Pulse Films is the company that has produced it.
Joe Ingham, an executive producer, said, "EastEnders has had a transformative effect on television audiences for forty years - myself included. It has been a privilege to work with the legend that is Ross Kemp and an honour to spend time in Walford, revealing a never before seen side of Albert Square, forging emotional family reunions, and exploring the impact its residents have and continue to have beyond E20.” (via BBC)
