The latest Attack on Titan: The Last Attack movie is now in theaters. Now, it’s actually just the ‘Final Chapters’ of the anime repackaged into a film. So, if you have watched the anime till the end, then you will know what happens in it. However, there’s a twist.Â
There’s a post-credits scene attached to the film. So, what is shown there? Is this a hint for the continuation of the franchise? In this article, we will discuss that and what it means for the future of Attack on Titan.Â
The after-credits scene of Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, which runs for about 45 seconds, isn’t an epilogue to Eren’s post-Rumbling story. Instead, it’s an alternate universe or maybe a future timeline adaptation of one of the most beloved spin-offs of the manga. It shows Eren, Armin, and Mikasa as school-going kids on a day out to the theater.Â
Fans who love reading everything related to Attack on Titan will know that it is based on author Hajime Isayama's bonus manga series called School Castes and The Last Attack adapts the 'End Roll' story. We see the gang watching the end of the show too with multiple other characters from the franchise popping up.Â
For example, we see Levi as a janitor. After they exit, Armin sees something on his phone and remarks that he has been waiting a decade for this day. He and Mikasa ask Erin for his opinion on the film and he replies, "If they release a sequel, let's watch it together."
As the three walk off, they wonder if the film they just watched- The Last Attack- was based on the Titan’s history 100 years before. We also see the tree where Eren’s body was buried at the end of the series.Â
Now, the post-credits scene could be just an alternate-universe ending that should be played off as just a joke. But could there be something more to it? First of all, the scene is a little meta-commentary on the show itself, especially with the comments about the long-awaited finale.Â
However, the comment that this film could be based on the events that happened a century ago in their universe, especially with the tree still being there, does raise interesting questions. Will they be answered anytime soon? Probably not and so it’s best to take the post-credits stinger as just a joke (at least for now).Â
