What is the plot of I am Married... But!?

Netflix’s down-to-earth romantic comedy I Am Married...But! delves into the realities of marriage beyond the “happily ever after.” Lin I-ling has spent three years living with her in-laws, contemplating divorce every week due to her husband Zeng Xue-you’s dependency on his mother. Though she dreams of moving out, she finds herself caught in a cycle—just as she’s ready to leave, she glimpses a charm in her husband that keeps her tethered.

Things take an unexpected turn when I-ling meets a handsome and charming pharmacist, Liu Wen-chieh, on a dating app and suddenly feels an urge to have a baby. This places her in a tug-of-war between emotional infidelity and family life. Meanwhile, Xue-you, who initially appears helpless and immature, finds himself drawn to a single mother, Chen Hsiao-lu, whose vulnerability stirs his protective instincts.

Director Li Nien-hsiu describes the series as a “woke” romantic drama that skips the honeymoon phase to explore marriage’s hidden struggles. “We are skipping the honeymoon phase and diving straight into married life to explore whether the princess, upon discovering that her prince is actually a mama’s boy and their castle essentially a prison, can still find reasons to love him amid their love-hate relationship,” she shared with Netflix.

Producer Vita Huang adds, “Just like the title suggests, married life is full of ‘buts,’ and the best stories are often found in the twists and turns. Many friends who have seen snippets of the series even suspected that we installed surveillance cameras in their homes. This is a testament to the series’ authentic storytelling.”

Marking her first on-screen pairing with Liu, Alice Ko shared with Netflix, “I-ling appears sharp-tongued and dominant in the relationship, but she’s really soft-hearted on the inside — she’s just more honest about life’s ups and downs."

Returning to Taiwanese drama after five years, Jasper Liu expresses his excitement, saying, “It’s been a long wait!” He plays a clumsy, obedient mummy’s boy, Zeng Xue-you, a role that challenged his perception: “Initially, I couldn’t fathom how someone like this could exist. But after several discussions with the director and doing my own research, I began to understand Zeng’s desire for harmony at home,” he added.

Reflecting on their chemistry, Liu adds, “We got along so well from the start, and by the end, I felt even more comfortable about our on-screen relationship. I was reluctant to finish filming!”

I Am Married…But! is an upcoming Taiwanese romantic comedy series written, directed, and edited by Li Nien-hsiu. Li Nien-hsiu drew inspiration from dating apps, observing that “many married people are on dating apps, and I couldn’t help but wonder what they’re searching for.” (via Netflix). Produced by Deal Entertainment Inc., the series is executive produced by Iza Sun and Vita Huang.
