Cassandra is a unique sci-fi show that weaves multiple plotlines together to create a story that’s terrifying and bizarre. It mixes sci-fi, mystery, and horror brilliantly in a way that has seldom been seen before. The series follows Samira “Sam” Prilla and her family after they move into a new house in a small town looking for a fresh start.
The move is stressful for the family which consists of Sam’s husband David and the kids, Fynn and Juno. Once they go into their retro-futuristic house, they realize that it is the oldest smart house in the country since it comes with its own robotic house helper. While things seem great at first, the robot Cassandra soon shows her true intentions. So, what happened in the end? In this article, we will discuss that.
It is revealed that Cassandra was the wife of the previous owner of the house- Horst Schmitt. They were a nuclear family with their son, Peter. Horst wasn’t an active father in his son’s life and often neglected his family for work. To make matters worse, Cassandra found out that her husband was having an affair with her best friend, Birgit.
This makes everything difficult for Cassandra since she had given birth to a disfigured daughter, Maggie, who Horst had hidden from everyone in a secret room. Horst convinces Cassandra to tell the world that the baby died in stillbirth. It’s made clear that Horst doesn’t care about her, not just because she’s deformed but also because she’s a girl.
In fact, it’s suspected that the reason why her face is malformed as well as why Cassandra gets a form of aggressive cancer is because Horst used a device he had invented, Vector Sound, to determine the sex of the child. When Cassandra finds out that she’s going to die, she tells her husband to upload her consciousness into the body of a robot- something he and his team had been working on before.
She wants to live on because she fears for Peter, who is still getting bullied at school, and also for Maggie, whose existence is a mystery for everyone outside their family. Horst’s team had found a way to make someone immortal, who wouldn’t be bound by an organic degradable body. However, the project was shelved because they needed a test subject who was willing to die for this task.
Cassandra volunteered to be that test subject since her life was up either way. Horst, drowning in guilt, accepted it. He uploaded her consciousness into a red robot’s body and connected it to the mainframe of the house. This basically ensured that she had control over every electronic device.
Once Cassandra’s consciousness gets uploaded into the robot, she changes from a kind and loving woman who wants to protect her children to one who is more mechanical. Also, previously she was powerless and had to accept anything her husband Horst wanted to do.
But not this time. Her mechanical reincarnation makes her realize that she holds a lot of power now. Now, she can cut phone connections and lock doors whenever she wants. As for how she can be shut down- there’s a master off switch present at the server that can end her.
However, Cassandra managed to gain total control over her on/off functions. So, there’s really nothing that can forcefully shut her down. This is why when Horst shuts her down, she comes back on and refuses to play along with his games. When he brings home Birgit and her son, Thomas, even claiming the boy as his own, she tries to push the stroller of the child down the stairs.
She also tries to burn Birgit’s face in the oven. Due to this, Horst tries to get everyone in the car. But Cassandra only lets them leave when Horst promises to also take Maggie. However, he goes back on his word and drives off leaving Cassandra and Maggie behind.
Peter isn’t happy that they left his sister behind and so he jumps out to save his sister. This results in Horst and Peter dying. When Cassandra finds out that her son is dead, she shuts down for decades till the Prills come to her house. As for Maggie, her life comes to an end in that room since with Cassandra shutting down, there’s no one left to care for her.
When Cassandra comes online with the arrival of the Prills, it’s revealed that she wants to have a family again. Over time, she manipulates the family into thinking that Sam is mentally unstable. David, Sam’s husband, is all too willing to believe the lies of the robot because the two are in a marital crisis.
This leads to Sam getting admitted to a mental health facility for treatment. With Sam out, Cassandra has the family in the palm of her hands. In the end, Sam runs away from the facility when Cassandra manipulates David and doesn’t let the family reunite even for Christmas.
However, Cassandra realizes that Sam is coming home because the facility informs David that his wife has run away. She threatens David to end his wife, and he agrees. When Sam returns, he attacks her. He claims that he is attacking her to save Fynn and Juno even though Cassandra was clear that she won't harm them.
In the end, after a cat-and-mouse hunt between Cassandra and Sam, the later manages to find the hidden room that belonged to Maggie. There, they discover what happened to her. This allows Sam to talk Cassandra out of the madness she is unleashing on them all.
She tells the automaton that the children will never love her if she kills their mother. Cassandra calms down and reveals that David has betrayed her before allowing her to escape. The Prills escape and the robot sets the house on fire, going down with it and ending this grotesque tale.
Cassandra is streaming on Netflix.
