A government of Mexico website was reportedly defaced by threat actors. According to reports, a new cybercriminal named Ghost7 hacked the website of Gobierno de Zacatecas, which translates to the Government of Zacatecas – a city in Mexico.

A dark web researcher Cyberundergroundfeed posted the following screenshot of the defaced website, which displayed an image of a girl holding a bouquet with the text saying, “Do You Miss Me?”

Ghost7 allegedly hacked the Mexican government portal and posted the above banner on the homepage.

Based on the image, it could be said that the defacement attack was launched on February 2. Several other threat actors were named in the post, including ‘All Indonesian Defacer.’

It is not clear if the intent of the defacement was a social cause, as is the case with most hacktivist groups. Our team checked the website of the Zacatecas government and found it was functioning normally.

We contacted government officials for a statement and will update this report after receiving a response. A similar banner was reported to have been posted on Indonesia's government website.

Defacement attacks are often launched by gaining unauthorized access after exploiting a vulnerability. It may involve altering the DNS response to exfiltrate data and redirecting site users to another website with derogatory content.

Such attacks involve posting defamatory comments to embarrass a company or governments. Attackers may also steal sensitive information like cloud credentials and launch malware attacks.
