The highly anticipated return of All American season 7 marks a fresh chapter with new faces and exciting storylines, but the absence of Daniel Ezra and Samantha Logan as full-time cast members leaves viewers wondering if the show will retain its charm.
While the premiere episode titled, “Reborn” introduces a host of new characters and dynamics, it does a great job of pulling fans back into the drama-filled world of Crenshaw and Beverly Hills. Let’s break down the key moments from All American season seven, episode one.
All American season 7 episode 1 kicks off by introducing KJ, a promising young football player from Oakland. Alongside his father, Cassius (a coach), and his mom, they seem like the perfect family, until we learn that Cassius and his wife are planning to separate. Cassius is determined to fight for his marriage, but his wife has made up her mind.
As KJ and his mom arrive at Crenshaw High, they cross paths with Khalil, a troubled student who might have to repeat the 11th grade due to missing too much school. This encounter sparks a rivalry between KJ and Khalil, setting the stage for more drama ahead.
Meanwhile, Coop is spending time with Amina, who is renting Spencer and Grace’s old house with her father, Preach. Though Amina believes she’s grown up, she quickly learns that she’s not quite ready to be independent, especially when she has to ask Coop for money to hang out with her friends. Preach, however, is noticeably absent during this episode, leaving fans wondering about his current role at the school.
Jordan Baker, now a coach at Crenshaw, faces his own set of challenges. When the head coach criticizes him for trying to be the players' friend rather than their coach, Jordan is forced to re-evaluate his approach. At home, he vents to Layla, who suggests that Jordan might need to establish clear boundaries with the players.
However, Jordan's new coaching style is tested when he finds out that his star quarterback, Yasi, skipped practice to go to the beach with KJ and a group of other kids, including Amina. Jordan goes to the beach to bring Yasi back, but things take a turn when Yasi, trying to act cool in front of his friends, plays a video of Jordan drinking during his college days. Yasi refuses to return to practice with Jordan, escalating the tension between them.
Later at the beach, after a confrontation with Khalil, Amina kisses KJ as a way to get back at Khalil. This sparks a physical altercation between KJ and Khalil, culminating in KJ deciding to leave the situation before things escalate further. KJ, now feeling the weight of his family’s changes, finds out that his parents are separating, and that he and his father, Cassius, will be moving to LA, while his mom stays in Oakland.
Back at home, Layla is struggling with a sense of boredom after achieving her goals in music and with the club. Coop, now a law school graduate, visits Layla, and they discuss the changes in their lives. They share a moment of reflection as they realize they’re the last two members of the once-famous Vortex crew. The two decide to drink during the day, reminiscing about their past, when Cassius joins them for an unexpected catch-up.
Later, at The Hangout, Amina runs into KJ and apologizes for kissing him earlier. They strike up a friendship, and soon Amina, KJ, and Jordan find themselves at Crenshaw High, throwing a football around. When Amina returns home, Khalil is waiting for her. He apologizes for his behavior at the beach and she encourages him to focus on his education. It’s clear that Amina still has feelings for Khalil, setting the stage for a full-blown love triangle.
Back at home, Jordan listens to a voicemail from Spencer, reminding him of the journey they started together and how Spencer became the coach who believed in him. This motivates Jordan to make some changes. He decides to set clear boundaries with his players by creating a new Instagram account, keeping his personal one private. This move impresses the head coach, who seems to have been hard on Jordan for a reason.
As the episode concludes, we learn that Cassius will be taking over the head coach position at Beverly Hills High, setting up a rivalry between Beverly and Crenshaw that’s sure to define the rest of the season.
All American airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW, with episodes available to stream the following day on The CW app. The second episode, titled "Get By," will air on The CW on Feb. 10, 2025.
