Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a massive hit and has remained influential even so many years after it went off the air. It still has a huge following and remains a cornerstone for building a long-running show around a female lead.

It began life as a movie starring Kristy Swanson in 1992. Five years down the line, the show with Sarah Michelle Gellar was on The WB. It also gave birth to the spin-off series, Angel. Now, a new sequel is in the works. In this article, we will reveal everything we know about it.

Is Buffy the Vampire Slayer Returning?

Buffy is going to be back to hunt again! A sequel series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works, and a pilot order will be given soon at Hulu. Sarah Michelle Gellar, the star of the original series is in talks to return as the iconic character in the new series.

However, the sequel will focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would have a recurring role (maybe as a mentor figure) rather than as the lead of the show. This show would be coming almost 25 years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer began airing in 1997 and ended in 2003.

Previously Gellar was not interested in a Buffy reboot idea. She said back in 2023 in an interview with SFX Magaxine (via MovieWeb), “I am very proud of the show that we created and [a revival] it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up.” But in late 2024, she changed her mind after seeing that reboots like Sex and the City and Dexter can work.

Behind the Scenes

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are in charge of writing and show running. They will also executive produce the show. Chloé Zhao will direct and executive producer under her Book of Shadows banner. Other executive producers include Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui.

The latter two will produce under the Suite B banner. Dolly Parton will also executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will be in charge of production.
