What is the plot of The Alto Knights?

The Alto Knights chronicles the real-life conflict between two of New York’s most notorious mob bosses, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. Once the best of friends, their relationship is shattered by petty jealousies and betrayals.

In 1957, Genovese attempted to assassinate Costello, but Costello survived, though severely wounded. The attack prompts Costello’s decision to retire from the Mafia, but his exit proves to be far from simple as family members and rivals close in, eager to seize power.

De Niro portrays both Costello and Genovese, showcasing their complex, volatile relationship that ultimately reshapes the Mafia and the course of American crime.

Is There a Trailer for The Alto Knights?

The trailer for The Alto Knights kicks off with Robert De Niro stepping into the roles of Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two notorious crime bosses who were once close friends. The first scene shows Genovese entering a restaurant, where Costello waits at a table.

As they sit opposite each other, Costello warns, “You’re going down a dangerous road.” Genovese, unfazed, replies, “We’ve taken risks like this before.” The trailer hints at their deepening conflict, with Costello trying to signal to Genovese that the stakes have risen.

It’s clear that their differing approaches to crime — with Costello trying to maintain a more public, respectable persona while Genovese stays immersed in the underworld — is causing a rift. The tension between them builds, leading to the inevitable betrayal. As the trailer concludes, the fatal clash is imminent, signaling the tragic end of their once-strong friendship.

Behind the Scenes

The Alto Knights is an upcoming American biographical crime drama directed by Barry Levinson, with a screenplay by Nicholas Pileggi, best known for Goodfellas and Casino. Produced by Levinson, Irwin Winkler, and others, the film is executive produced by Mike Drake. The screenplay is based on Pileggi’s novel Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family, which inspired Goodfellas.

Levinson, who previously collaborated with De Niro on films like Wag the Dog and The Wizard of Lies, praised De Niro in an interview for his ability to portray two distinct characters, calling it “like working with two different actors.” Levinson has described the film as the story of “best friends who become mortal enemies.”
