What is the plot of the 1988 film?

The 1988 film, which is the first entry in the franchise, takes place at the Nakatomi Plaza. The action begins on Christmas Eve when Bruce Willis’ John McClane goes to visit his wife Holly at her company’s Christmas party. They have been separated, and this is his chance to reunite with her. 

But at the plaza, West German terrorists break in and take everyone hostage. McClane then formulates a plan to escape detection and he kills off the captors one by one. He then realizes that their real agenda is to steal $60 million from the building's vault. In the end, he kills off the leader of the operation and thwarts their plans.
