A Ghost Story for Christmas: Woman of Stone will be available on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2025, BBC Two at 10:15 p.m. It will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
A Ghost Story for Christmas: Woman of Stone is based on the 1887 short story called Man-Size in Marble by E. Nesbit. It is a story steeped in supernatural and gothic elements. The plot follows Edith Nesbit as she reflects on the events surroundings Jack and Laura Lorimer, a young Victorian couple.
Jack and Laura spend their days in a little village cottage. Their picturesque surroundings and quaint life is disrupted by the ominous warnings of their housekeeper Mrs Dorman. She tells them a curious tale of two marble tomb knights lying in the Church.
A legend says that these marble statues will return to life on Christmas Eve. Jack isn’t too bothered or swayed by this tale, which he considers to be superstitious nonsense. However, on Christmas Eve, something brings him to the Church, leaving Laura alone to face the terror.
In an interview with BBC, Mark Gatiss said that the choice of story ultimately boiled down to budget constraints. He said, “As ever, I’m guided by the quality of the story and what will fit neatly into the constraints of a very tight budget and shooting schedule! This story is very contained and has a small cast so I knew we could achieve it.”
Yes, and the trailer shows the housekeeper, Mrs Dorman, narrating the tale of the two marble effigies rising up on Christmas Eve. It ends with Jack Lorimer saying, “Just as the legend foretold, the men of marble are coming back here to kill!” The eerie atmosphere adds to the story. Check out the trailer below:
