Artivion, an Atlanta-based company that manufactures devices and tools for cardiac and vascular surgeons, has over 1,250 employees worldwide and sales representatives in over 100 countries. It also operates manufacturing facilities in Austin (TX), Kennesaw (GA), and Hechingen (Germany).

In an 8-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) posted on Monday, December 9, Artivion disclosed a cybersecurity incident that occurred on November 21, 2024. According to the company’s statements, its response measures included “taking certain systems offline, initiating an investigation, and engaging external advisors.”

The filing does not mention a ransomware attack, but it notes that “the incident involved the acquisition and encryption of files.” As of right now, we have no additional information about the scope of the attack, as no threat groups have claimed it. However, based on the time given to Artivion to decide if paying a ransom is justified, we can expect that more information will surface in the upcoming days or weeks.

The company also added that its services and products remain available to its customers but that the incident has disrupted order and shipping processes and corporate operations, which “have been largely mitigated.” The 8-K filing also states that Artivion was exposed to additional expenses due to the attack and that insurance might not cover additional costs in the future.

This latest incident shows that despite the advances in AI and anti-malware systems, ransomware attacks are still widely used by malicious actors to extort victims worldwide. In the last couple of months, we’ve seen ransomware attacks disrupt companies like Newpark Resources, Henry Schein, Casio, Lehigh Vallery Health Network, Haliburton, and more.
