Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is already the talk of the town thanks to its star cast consisting of Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp, as well as the iconic gothic story it is based on- Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula and the 1922 film of the same name.
The official trailer is already out and the film is being praised for its horror, drama, and gothic ambience, providing something never-seen-before. What’s also intriguing moviegoers are the various behind-the-scenes details like the fact that the film used five thousand real rats for a sequence, which went about as well as expected.
Nosferatu has been in the works for a long while. In fact, Eggers credits the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror for giving him his love of horror. He first watched it when he was 9 and since then he has wanted to bring the story to the silver screen, a task he has finally accomplished.

Nosferatu will be released in theaters on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, by Focus Features in the United States. Universal Pictures is handling the international release. The movie was released in Berlin on Dec. 2, 2024.
Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is being described as a 19th-century gothic obsession tale between a haunted young woman and an ancient vampire who stalks her in Germany and brings untold horrors from his land of Transylvania.
It is directly based on F.W. Murnau's 1922 film of the same name where Thomas Huttler, a real estate agent goes to visit a client named Count Orlok. There, the German man discovers that the count is actually an undead demon who wants to ravage Hutter’s town. During the vampire’s reign of terror, Hutter’s wife, Ellen, realizes that she’s the key to stopping this monster.
The official trailer begins with a chilling female voice saying “Come to me” before Ellen awakens and begins describing the horrifying murderous dreams she has been having since her childhood. But strangely Ellen says, “But I’d never been so happy.”
Nosferatu’s reign of terror begins when a man says, “This Creature is a force more powerful than evil.” What follows is terror, blood, and horror, in the wake of the demon. Check out the trailer below:
Nosferatu is seen as an archaic Romanian word that means vampire. It was largely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by western fiction writers. It is used in the novel Dracula (1897) and also in the German expressionist film Nosferatu (1922).
Willem Dafoe in an interview with IndieWire revealed that his character was a little like Van Helsing’s. He said, “kind of a Van Helsing type of character, but not exactly. So he’s true to the source in some ways but also invented in some ways. I don’t know what else to tell!”
However, there are rumors that his character Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz is a reference to Albin Grau, the producer of the original Nosferatu and a person who was deeply into the occult.
Shooting for Nosferatu began on Feb. 20, 2023, in the Czech Republic. Filming locations included Barrandov Studios, Rožmitál pod Castle, Pernštejn Castle, and Invalidovna complex among others. Filming also moved to Germany and Romania for exterior shots. Filming wrapped on May 19, 2023.
Nosferatu is directed by Robert Eggers with a screenplay by him as well. The film is produced by Eggers, Jeff Robinov, Eleanor Columbus, John Graham, and Chris Columbus. Production companies involved are Studio 8, Maiden Voyage Pictures, and Birch Road Entertainment. Cinematography is by Jarin Blaschke and music is given by Robin Carolan.
