All we know About the First DCU Project Creature Commandos

The DCU is finally here as the much-anticipated animated show, Creature Commandos has premiered, and with it, James Gunn’s DC era has begun! The show follows the events of the first season of 2022’s Peacemaker. Amanda Waller is no longer able to put human lives at risk for her secret missions. 

But she is still the head of A.R.G.U.S. and this time she assembles a team of monsters led by General Rick Flag Sr. The monsters and metahumans who are a part of Creature Commandos are names casual DC fans would be familiar with, but James Gunn is a master of making lesser-known characters become beloved and famous. 

After all, we have already seen him do this with Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. But has he succeeded this time? In this article, we will discuss everything about Creature Commandos from streaming details, plot insights, season 2 possibilities, and more.

What is the plot of Creature Commandos?

Creature Commandos follows a group of meta-humans, monsters, and super-humans recruited by Amanda Waller. After the disastrous Project Starfish, she isn’t allowed to recruit the prisoners from Belle Reve to clean up any more classified military messes. 

So, she recruits monsters and gets a human to lead the team. The group consists of Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, the Bride, G.I. Robot, and Weasel. In the world of DC comics, Creature Commandos began in 1980, created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick for Weird War Tales issue 93 (November 1980). It was originally set in World War II but was later modernized into 2000. 

As with comic book teams, the character roster isn’t set in stone, which allows creatives to play around with the members and decide which characters they want to be a part of the team.

Is Creature Commandos a Sequel?

Yes, Creature Commandos is a sequel to Peacemaker Season 1. It follows the events of Peacemaker Season 1 and sees Amanda Waller recruiting a new covert military team full of monsters. The team is also referred to as Task Force M with M standing for Monster. 

Is Creature Commandos Canon to DCU?

Yes, Creature Commandos is the first of multiple shows and films that will be part of the new DCU canon. This means that it will be in the same timeline as live-action projects like Superman: Legacy, Lanterns, Peacemaker season 2, etc. 

Will There be a Creature Commandos Season 2?

In an interview with Screen Rant, Dean Lorey revealed that there has been no official confirmation, but expressed that he would love to return for another season. He said, “Yeah, we absolutely want to do a second season. There's no particular five-season plan or anything like that. But we definitely want to do another season.”

Behind-the-Scenes

Creature Commandos is written by James Gunn and based on the characters from DC. The showrunner is Dean Lorey and it was executive produced by Gunn, Peter Safran, Lorey, and Sam Register under DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. 

Production was underway by January 2023 and animation studio Bobbypills worked on the show. Kevin Kiner and Clint Mansell have composed the music. The theme of the series is Hugo Blanco’s Moliendo Café.
