Spoiler Alert

This article contains details from the series finale of Superman & Lois.

The CW has bid farewell to Superman & Lois with an epic finale that closed the chapter on Superman’s greatest enemy, Lex Luthor, and also let viewers know of the kind of lives their favorite characters would go on to have. In this article, we will take a look at the finale and also discuss what the stars and showrunners have to say about the series finale.

What Happened in the Superman & Lois Series Finale?

In the Superman & Lois series finale, It Went By So Fast, we saw Clark battle Doomsday and Lex Luthor with the help of his sons, Jordan and Jonathan. The kids save their father from certain death at the hands of Doomsday by luring the monster away so that Superman can think of a plan to defeat the killing machine.

After wrapping up Doomsday, Clark and Lois send Lex Luthor to jail for life for the crimes he has committed. The show then fast forwards a year later and we see John Henry Irons marry Lana Lang. Then we see Clark and Lois’s lives get played out over the years in a sweeping montage.

Clark got a heart transplant from his father-in-law earlier in season 4. This means that Superman with a human heart is essentially mortal. So he and Lois grow old together and see their boys grow old and have their families. Clark hangs up his boots and cape and instead of physically fighting monsters, he chooses to become the champion of the opressed by addressing systemic issues.

Lois’cancer also returns, taking her with it this time. After she passes, Clark lives out the rest of his life with Krypto before he finally dies of old age and is reunited with Lois again.

Superman & Lois Showrunners Explain the Series Finale

Superman & Lois showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher gave more insight into their decision to make the finale so human for such a non-human and powerful character in an interview with Deadline

Fletcher said, “we felt like it was to show that that was a life well-lived. What are the auspices of a life well-lived? It’s hope, joy, family and good all these things that he is. It was a hard thing to compact, but we felt that that montage could give a little window into that and give a little inspiration. We’re all mortal, and maybe there’s a beauty to our mortality that even Superman faces.”

Helbeing said, “In the history of Superman, he is in a lot of ways immortal, right? He’s gonna live forever. He’s gonna outlive Lois. He’s gonna outlive his boys. But in this version, with what happened to him, he wasn’t going to do that anymore.”

Superman & Lois stars talk About the Series Finale

Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch talked about their feelings regarding the ending in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Hoechlin said, “We're very, very fortunate to get to [end the show]. I know how it's ending now compared to how it could have ended had we not come back [after season 3] is pretty night and day. So I'm happy for the fans. They get a little bit of closure.”

Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane said, “I'm grateful that we had four seasons and I'm grateful that we had the final season at least to close it out, and I hope that people like the ending. I think it'll probably be a little bit controversial. I was ugly crying.”

Tulloch also talked about the beautiful montage sequence in the finale where it is revealed that Clark and Lois never spent a day apart till the day she died. She said, “We shot that scene absolutely last, and so it was emotional for everyone who was there. There were actors who weren't in the scene who wanted to be there for the last scene that we shot on the show, and the crew was emotional. When I read the script, I was tearing up, and then I was tearing up even more when I was filming it and watching Tyler's stuff.”

Hoechlin backed his co-star up and said, “To wrap the show up on that note was very fitting. I'm really happy that that was what we leaned into.”

Superman & Lois is available to stream on Max.
