Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will be released in theaters on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning follows Ethan Hunt as he confronts an AI known as The Entity, which poses a dire threat to global security. In Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan discovers that The Entity is hidden aboard a Russian submarine, setting the stage for the continuing conflict in the new film.
The Entity, capable of catastrophic consequences if mishandled, becomes the primary focus as Ethan races against time to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.
Ethan must also face his former adversary, Gabriel, who is equally determined to control The Entity. The early plot will likely focus on Ethan's quest to locate the sunken Sevastopol, where the AI is hidden, a critical challenge since he is unaware of its exact location.
As the first direct sequel in the Mission: Impossible series, The Final Reckoning promises to deliver the thrilling espionage and death-defying stunts the franchise is known for, with Ethan and his team facing their most dangerous mission yet.
The trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning offers a high-octane preview of Ethan Hunt's final adventure. We see Cruise diving into icy waters to explore a wrecked submarine, evading explosions, and performing gravity-defying stunts. A thrilling moment showcases Hunt hanging from a biplane at dizzying heights, emphasizing the film's commitment to practical action.
The teaser also teases emotional weight, with a voiceover stating, “Our lives are not defined by any one action. Our lives are the sum of our choices,” building anticipation for the film's emotional payoff. A flashback to the original Mission: Impossible adds a layer of nostalgia, tying the finale back to its roots.
As the trailer concludes, Ethan's heartfelt plea—“I need you to trust me, one last time”—suggests that this mission might not just be about saving the world but also about closure. The teaser promises a blend of action, heart, and suspense as the saga draws to a close.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ends with a dramatic cliffhanger. Ethan Hunt and his team, after a series of intense encounters, are in pursuit of two high-tech keys that control the Entity, a rogue AI system.
The keys are key to either destroying or controlling the AI, which has the power to manipulate global technology and security. After securing one of the keys, Ethan’s ally, Ilsa Faust, is tragically killed by Gabriel, a mercenary working for the Entity with a mysterious past tied to Ethan.
In a final attempt to get the other key, Grace, a skilled thief who has joined Ethan’s team, impersonates Alanna Mitsopolis on the Orient Express. However, things go awry, and although Ethan retrieves both keys from Gabriel, the villain escapes.
The movie concludes with Ethan and his team now on a high-stakes mission to find and destroy the Entity’s core, hidden inside the sunken Russian submarine Sevastopol, setting the stage for the next chapter.
The new Mission: Impossible movie is titled Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This title reflects the ongoing saga’s dramatic conclusion, signaling that this could be the final chapter for Ethan Hunt.
The word "Final" hints at the possibility of wrapping up the series, while "Reckoning" suggests that past misdeeds are coming back to haunt Ethan, likely leading to a confrontation with his many enemies from his past black-ops missions. The choice to use "Reckoning" also implies a form of justice or vengeance tied to Ethan’s previous actions.
Interestingly, while Dead Reckoning was originally intended as a two-part finale, the underperformance of the first film at the box office likely influenced the decision to rename the sequel. By changing the title to The Final Reckoning, Paramount aims to assure audiences that this installment can be followed without having seen the first part, making it more accessible. However, the film will still continue the story from Dead Reckoning, focusing on Ethan's mission to destroy the Entity and recover Sevastopol.
This new title also suggests that, despite the high stakes and the potential finality of this story, the future of the Mission: Impossible franchise remains uncertain. Tom Cruise has expressed interest in continuing the role of Ethan Hunt well into his later years, though much depends on how this film performs. If The Final Reckoning proves successful, don’t be surprised if Hunt’s adventures continue in some form.
Of course, Tom Cruise is still performing his own stunts in Mission: Impossible 8. During the 2022 CinemaCon, a sneak peek featured Cruise flying a biplane before jumping out — a stunt that was confirmed in the The Final Reckoning teaser trailer.
Additionally, in Dead Reckoning, Cruise learned the perilous sport of speed-flying, which director Christopher McQuarrie called one of the most dangerous activities in the world. With these audacious feats, you can always count on Cruise to take his stunts to the next level. Check out the behind-the-scenes video below.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning began filming in March 2022, with principal photography taking place in the United Kingdom, including at Longcross Studios and the Lake District. The production team also filmed in a variety of international locations, such as Malta, South Africa, and Norway.
Initially planned to be filmed back-to-back with Dead Reckoning Part One, this plan was changed by February 2021. By December 2022, filming in the UK was completed, after which the crew moved to Apulia, Italy, and filmed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier.
However, production faced delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which paused the project in July 2023. Filming resumed in March 2024 but was delayed again in May due to a submarine malfunction. As of November 2024, production has officially concluded, and the film is now in post-production.
Christopher McQuarrie returns as the director and co-writer for the eighth installment of Mission: Impossible. Following his successful work on Rogue Nation, Fallout, and Dead Reckoning, McQuarrie teams up once again with Tom Cruise to bring this action-packed sequel to the big screen. The script, co-written by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller, and Erik Jendresen, continues the thrilling story from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
Cruise serves as a producer, with McQuarrie, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Chris Brock executive producing the project. The movie is produced by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, with Gina Hallas credited as co-producer. This marks McQuarrie’s fourth time at the helm of a Mission: Impossible film, continuing his collaboration with Cruise, which also included the Jack Reacher series and Top Gun: Maverick.
