Plot
Interior Chinatown centers on Willis Wu, who is confined to the role of a background character within a police procedural titled Black & White. Stuck in a repetitive existence, he works as a waiter, yearning for a life that extends beyond the confines of Chinatown and dreaming of becoming the protagonist of his own narrative.
His life takes a dramatic turn when he inadvertently witnesses a crime, which propels him into a complex criminal conspiracy. This unexpected event not only unveils a web of illicit activities in Chinatown but also forces Willis to confront his family's hidden history.
Along the way, he navigates thrilling encounters, including a budding relationship with a detective named Lana Lee. As he strives to step into the spotlight, the series explores themes of identity, ambition, and the desire for agency in a world where chaos—like kung fu—can erupt at any moment.

Filming
Filming for the series commenced in Feb. 2023, with shooting locations including Chinatown in Los Angeles, New Zealand, and Toronto. Filming was completed before Aug. 2023.
Behind the Scenes
Taika Waititi directs the pilot episode of the series, with Charles Yu serving as the creator and showrunner. Produced by 20th Television, the project features an impressive lineup of executive producers, including Yu, Waititi, Dan Lin, and Lindsey Liberatore from Rideback. Additional producers are Jeff Skoll, Miura Kite, and Elsie Choi from Participant, along with Garrett Basch from Dive and John Lee. This collaborative effort aims to bring Yu's vision, based on his book of the same name, to life on screen.
