Plot

In It’s What’s Inside, a pre-wedding party takes a dark turn when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious suitcase containing a body-swapping machine. The group of friends, including anxious Shelby, her dismissive boyfriend Cyrus, influencer Nikki, charming groom Reuben, trust-fund kid Dennis, artist Brooke, spiritual Maya, and the enigmatic Forbes, are soon plunged into a night of chaos, where hidden secrets, desires, and grudges come to light. As they swap bodies, their relationships and personal identities are put to the test, leading to both absurd and existential revelations.

Greg Jardin, the film's writer-director, uses the body-swapping concept to explore artificial intimacy and the effects of online personas on personal relationships. The movie blends humor with sci-fi, while also delving into the anxieties of its characters, particularly Shelby’s. Through jittery editing and a tense atmosphere, Jardin creates what he calls an "anxiety chic" experience—one that keeps audiences on edge, but in a fun way.

Behind the Scenes

Written and directed by Greg Jardin, It’s What’s Inside is produced by William Rosenfeld, Kate Andrews, Jason Baum, and Raúl Domingo, with Colman Domingo, Ulf Ek, and Robert Kapp serving as executive producers. The movie delves into the theme of "artificial intimacy," exploring how society has become dependent on screens for self-worth and romantic connection.

Jardin told Entertainment Weekly that the film focuses on a crisis relationship. Both partners have consumed so much online artifice that they struggle to connect due to warped values. Jardin describes the movie as a "sci-fi thriller with jokes," not horror.

Filming occurred in November 2022 in Portland, Oregon, USA. This film marks Jardin’s directorial debut following his SXSW Grand Jury Prize win. Colman Domingo, who was eager to support Jardin’s vision, praised the director for his multifaceted skills, noting his talents as both a writer and editor, which helped bring the film’s unique visual language to life.
