Paul Schrader, renowned for his distinctive cinematic vision, is back with a highly anticipated drama, Oh, Canada. This film, based on Russell Banks' 2021 novel Foregone, stars Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi as the older and younger versions of the same character. Schrader’s recent successes with First Reformed, The Card Counter, and Master Gardener build high expectations for this new project.

Oh, Canada had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024, and will also be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. ARP has secured the French distribution rights for the film.

In this article, we’ll cover everything we know about Oh, Canada, from its premiere details to cast updates. Stay tuned for ongoing updates as new information becomes available!

Release date & Where to Watch

Oh, Canada is set for a theatrical release in December 2024, with Kino Lorber handling its distribution. An exact release date for its December debut has yet to be announced.

Plot

We don't have an official synopsis for the movie yet, but we do know what Foregone is about.

Foregone centers on Leonard Fife, a renowned Canadian-American leftist filmmaker who fled to Canada during the Vietnam War to avoid the draft. Now in his late seventies and terminally ill, Fife agrees to a final interview with his former student, Malcolm MacLeod, and a team of documentary filmmakers.

The film explores Fife's attempt to disclose his secrets and demythologize his storied life. As he reveals his past, including his escape from the U.S. and his stance on the war draft, Fife’s reliability as a narrator is compromised by his failing memory. Adapted from Russell Banks' 2021 novel, Foregone examines themes of memory, myth, and personal reckoning through Fife's confessions.
