After facing days of Internet shutdown due to deadly protests organized by university students who battle against the system of reserving some public sector jobs for the relatives of war heroes, people across Bangladesh have started to turn to VPNs en masse.

Even though Internet restrictions began to ease, access to many websites and digital services is not yet available. As reported by TechRadar, platforms like Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube are still unavailable, preventing people from communicating and following the latest developments in the country.

The first spike in VPN usage was observed on July 23, 2024, after 5 days of Internet shutdowns. According to Proton VPN, a shocking 3500% spike in signups was recorded starting July 23.

Other online sources and VPN providers have recorded a surge in signups from 2500% to 7043%. That said, it’s obvious that Internet users in Bangladesh are desperately seeking a way to unblock the Web.

Even after the protests wind down, you’ll still need a VPN due to the country’s ever-growing list of blocked websites. Just recently, we’ve also seen reports of Bangladeshi cops leaking citizens’ personal data to criminals, which is another reason for concern.

VPNs have become an essential tool for battling Web roadblocks and censorship worldwide. According to Proton VPN’s reports, there was an 800% surge in signups last week from Venezuela, where massive protests are happening right now. Last month, a 1200% increase in signups was detected in Kenya due to public anger and nationwide demonstrations over the government’s decision to impose new taxes.
