Google Maps received one of its most significant updates this year today for Android and iOS users. An update is rolling out to mobile users which includes a new ‘Commute' tab that has been in the works for months. Google Maps users will be able to use the new tab to know exactly where they are when using public transport like buses or trains. Google will let you know if you are running late or early.

Google Maps Group Product Manager Ramesh Nagarajan revealed “We’ll tell you if your commute is going to be a normal one or if you’ll need to budget extra time due to things like an accident or heavy traffic. In the case of a delay, we’ll tell you about alternative routes to help you get to work faster.

The new update is rolling out to Google Maps for Android, and iOS users in 80 regions and all users should receive the update by the end of this week. Google revealed that the feature would be rolling out to more regions in the future in the coming weeks after the first rollout.

Prior to the update, users were able to choose only one form of transportation when planning trips. The only workaround would be to create separate trips that link your commute. With the latest update, you can choose multiple transportation options when setting up your travel route.

Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play Music controls are also being added to the app as part of the update. The feature is specifically designed for users who use Android Auto devices or dock their phones or tablets for traveling. You can now manage your music without leaving the Google Maps app.
