Snow Dogs: Into the Wild is inspired by 1903's The Call of The Wild Jack London novel, veteran wildlife filmmaker Gordon Buchanan's childhood dream was to command a team of dogs out in the Yukon wilderness, following in the footsteps of the Scottish Klondike gold rush explorers who used these trails over 100 years ago. In the documentary, he gets close to seven huskies on a perilous dogsled adventure through Canada's breathtaking Yukon wilderness.
Gordon meets Pierre-Luc Fortin (an expert musher and owner of 29 loyal Alaskan huskies) as he's introduced to his seven sled dog team: pack leader Yukon and Hero, Epic, Vicky, Lucky, Exy, and Wookie. Gordon's eager to get acquainted, but the dogs are not so much. He has just one day to practice before heading off on their journey, starting with an 11km run across a frozen lake - and he's a complete novice.
Now, Gordon begins to realize that his romanticized view of London's novel was wrong, as he has a lot to learn if he is to survive the blizzards, tree stumps, and endless branches that knock him off his sled, and he learns the hard way that there is a pecking order for feeding and sleeping arrangements - starting with the lead dog, whose respect he needs to succeed in commanding the team.
Rather than dominating the dogs, he earns their trust, respect, and love by spending time with them, getting to know their individual personalities, and tending to their needs. The bond between them needs to be strong enough for him to take on the toughest challenge of his life - the treacherous Burn Run.
