Web discovery service StumbleUpon is shutting down after being up and running for 16 years to 40 million internet users. The service was designed before the era of social media and allowed users to find interesting website content seamlessly. StumbleUpon has almost 60 billion “stumbles” (website views), and the platform has inspired many apps and websites that offer curated content.

The platform announced earlier this year that its services will be stopped on June 30 and Mix will be replacing the platform. Mix offers all of the features we have grown to love from the service and greatly improves upon them. Mix allows users to organize content in ‘collections’ for viewing and organizing. It will also offer deep social integration and also offer recommendations to other Mix users.

Founder Garrett Camp revealed his plans for Mix and StumbleUpon in a blog post. He stated “After careful consideration, we’ve made the decision to focus fully on building Mix and transition StumbleUpon accounts into Mix.com over the next couple months. We have built Mix to work on every browser and smartphone, to make the transition as smooth as possible. With a few clicks, you can register and import your SU favorites, interests and tags — creating Mix Collections that are easily shared with friends.”

Camp described Mix as a platform that “combines social and semantic personalization into one streamlined experience. It also makes it easier for people to organize content into meaningful collections. This will help you find obscure but interesting content that has been recommended by people you know and trust.”

The development team has requested users to migrate to Mix to continue exploring curated content. All account holders can connect their existing accounts with Mix and transfer their account data to the new platform.
