Apple is reported to be preparing for the launch of the brand’s next-gen AirPods headphones, which are likely to be revealed next year. Apple introduced its first generation AirPods last year which allowed users to seamlessly connect to any Bluetooth-compatible smartphone, tablet or computer without needing any wires at all.

The first generation AirPods headphones lacked noise cancellation features which affected the audio quality in noisy environments. The headphones did not include water resistance features, which made the product not feel compelling for outdoor usage.

The wireless AirPods are an improvement over the previously popular Apple EarPods which were wired and offered a similar sound signature with crisp audio. It is likely that the upgraded model will include enhancements to audio quality as well. Apple is also said to be including a new wireless chip to improve the hands-free features. The AirPods include a charging case which allows users to quickly charge their headphones on-the-go.

Reports suggest that Apple will also be introducing a new charging mat that is capable of charging the headphones as well as other Apple devices that support wireless charging. The ‘AirPower’ charging mat will be capable of powering up the iPhone X, Apple Watch, and the next-gen AirPods as well as select future Apple devices.

Apple acquired popular audio peripheral brand Beats in 2014, but the tech giant did not introduce any new over-the-ear headsets under the Apple brand. According to previous rumors, Apple was working on over-the-ear headphones for music loves, but with the new AirPods coming up next year, the new lineup of full-sized headsets is likely to be delayed.
