Microsoft has been rumored to launch a new dual-screen device based on Windows 10. Several patents and leaked design concepts have surfaced over the past few months that hint at Microsoft’s new “Andromeda” device could offer a hybrid solution that combines the portability of a tablet and the performance of an Ultrabook with desktop-grade applications. According to a recent report from Winfuturereports, Dell is working on a similar device which will be based on the ARM architecture.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella hinted at upcoming Microsoft devices last year by mentioning how they are working on devices that can cater to both PC and mobile users. With the 2019 Microsoft Build Conference likely to take place in May 2019, we still have a year to go until we see these devices become a reality.

It is unlikely the device will release before 2019 as the device is rumored to include the Snapdragon 850 ARM processor which is scheduled for release on mobile devices next year. The Snapdragon 845 is this year’s flagship processor, and the 850 is set for release in 2019 for mobile devices, which is when the Windows devices with the processor are likely to release. Dell is likely to provide an OEM alternative to Microsoft’s Andromeda project, which includes a streamlined version of Windows 10 that is optimized for touchscreens similar to Windows Mobile which has now been discontinued.

There have been reports of multiple Windows devices being canceled to favor Andromeda’s release. Multiple Dell Windows devices, as well as the Surface Mini, will not be launched. The mysterious Andromeda device from Microsoft will not be a Microsoft exclusive. Multiple dual-screen devices are expected to be launched alongside Microsoft’s own hardware from manufacturers like Asus, HP, and Lenovo who have worked with Microsoft to release Windows 10 devices based on the ARM architecture which included the Snapdragon 835 processor by Qualcomm.
