Apple is all set to buy the digital magazine service which goes by as the “Netflix of Magazines.” Texture which is currently owned by Next Issue Media is a subscription-based platform which allows users to gain access to over two hundred magazines for a monthly fee. The acquisition entitles Apple to the entirety of Next Issue Media along with its full staff.
With social media companies such as Facebook tweaking their algorithms in such a way that fake news and friend activities are getting priority over legitimate journalism, the news publishing industry is currently in a hotchpotch. Hence, it is as important a time as any, for “quality journalism” to make itself to the doorstep of regular consumers.
Eddy Cue, Apple SVP of internet software and service commented, “We are committed to quality journalism from trusted sources and allowing magazines to keep producing beautifully designed and engaging stories for users.”
Before getting their hands on Texture, Apple already used to gather news from third-party publishers and made them accessible through the Apple News Platform. However, Android users had access to a variety of news portals thanks to the Google Play Store. Similarly, Amazon has also started its own subscription reading service. Hence this step might just be Apple trying to match its competitors offering.
Texture had a multi-platform availability, catering its services to users of iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, and Windows 10. However, there are no plans to change this availability, and it is likely that the magazine service will still be available on all these platforms. A monthly subscription for Texture costs around $9.99 a month and gives users access to magazines such as the The New Yorker, People, Time, GQ, and many others.
