#1 Happy Family USA follows the maniacally upbeat Husseins — “the most patriotic, most peaceful, and most definitely-not-suspicious Muslim family in post-9/11 ‘Amreeka,’” according to a press release. With sharp satire and absurdity, the animated series explores how this Muslim-American family tries to maintain their identity while constantly being surveilled by intrusive neighbors in the early 2000s.
Based on Ramy Youssef’s “childhood nightmares,” the story begins as the optimistic Hussein's move to America at the worst possible time: September 2001. With 9/11 looming over their arrival, things only get more complicated for a young Muslim boy trying to fit in while wearing hand-me-down jerseys and dealing with a dad who cosplays as Uncle Sam to help boost sales at his Halal cart. Oh, and there’s also a talking sheep.
Youssef and co-creator Pam Brady take a decidedly satirical approach to turn-of-the-millennium politics, as the more this Muslim-American family is marginalized, the more absurdly patriotic they become.
“This is a show about capitalism,” (via Variety) Youssef told the audience at the series premiere in Austin. He added, “And I think when you watch the first couple of episodes, you’ll see that, but it is certainly not representative of Arabs or Muslims — many of which will, I think, see things that they really appreciate and other things where they’ll be like, ‘What the f**k, Ramy. Why do you do this stuff?’”
Youssef revealed he first pitched the show during Donald Trump’s first presidential run. “That’s how long it’s been. Remember the happy Trump? He’s sad now, by the way. I don’t know if you guys noticed,” he joked. “I don’t think he likes this either... haven’t seen him smile once, the whole time. The first time he’s always laughing. So yeah, shout out to him… This guy is miserable!”
The trailer for #1 Happy Family USA kicks off with the Hussein family beginning their journey in the USA. They are optimistic that this fresh start will change their lives for the better.
But it then cuts to sharp, uncomfortable humor, including a scene where the father, Hussein Hussein, gets tackled by airport security while simply kneeling to pray. Another standout moment shows a teacher declaring, “Okay, class. Today, we’re gonna be studying a new subject. Terrorism. This will replace math."
As the trailer rolls on, the Husseins are seen doing suburban activities like hosting barbecues, all while their neighbors spy on them with blatant suspicion. Despite the ridicule and scrutiny, the trailer ends on a note of defiant optimism, with the family holding strong to their identity and determination to fit in. The mix of bold humor and biting commentary makes it clear: #1 Happy Family USA isn’t holding back.

Yes, there will be a second season of #1 Happy Family USA. In March 2022, Amazon Prime Video gave the series a rare two-season order from the start. Both seasons have already been completed.
#1 Happy Family USA is an upcoming animated sitcom created by Ramy Youssef and Pam Brady for Amazon Prime Video. It is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, A24, and Cairo Cowboy.
Youssef and Brady serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, joined by Mona Chalabi, Andy Campagna, Josh Rabinowitz, and A24. Cairo Cowboy, Youssef’s production company, is also behind the series, with previous credits including Hulu’s Ramy and Netflix’s Mo, both Peabody Award-winning shows. The company also produced Youssef’s acclaimed HBO specials Feelings and More Feelings.
During a special preview of the first three episodes, Youssef appeared on stage alongside Brady and Chalabi, who serves as executive producer and illustrator. “The whole show was designed by Muslims,” (via Variety) Youssef revealed.
Chalabi, who had only worked on “basic motion design” before brought the characters to life in the writers’ room. Youssef added, “We all knew that she would kill it,” and credited Prime Video for supporting the creative process: “We sold this in 2020, and I really feel like if we walked in today, they’d be like, ‘What the fuck are you talking about?’”
